Vitamin E is the number one nutrient needed by the body, because it is incorporated into all cell membranes and protects against free radical damage. Yet, it remains the most enigmatic or mysterious as we still don’t know everything that it really does. Today the mechanisms of use are better understood, and researchers are uncovering how important this nutrient is for health and wellness for all ages and genders.
So far in the breakdown of natural Vitamin E there are two components identified as tocopherols and tocotrienols. Both are further divided into alpha, beta, gamma and delta forms. For many years only the alpha form was recognized as useful. The d form of natural Vitamin E is absorbed much better, since the body readily recognizes it and knows where it is needed. Thus, not only is less required, but there is no toxicity when it comes directly from food.
Since researchers haven’t determined how beta, gamma, and delta forms are utilized, it is common to find only d-alpha-tocopheral as a supplement. Natural source d-alpha-tocopherol is extracted from plants and then purified and methylated. So, it is highly processed. That’s why I prefer natural plant source full-spectrum vitamin E which includes alpha, beta, gamma and delta forms and their co-factors which are necessary for best absorption and utilization by the body.
Then there is a third source which is the synthetic dl form of Vitamin E. When research with Vitamin E concludes with bad or negative results, it seems it is always associated with this form of vitamin E. This dl-alpha-tocopherol is synthesized with toluene, 2,3,5-trimethy-hydoquinone and reacted with isophytol. Isophytol is a product synthesized from acetylene, acetone, and hydrogenated with isopropenyl methyl ether and then these chemicals are extracted with caustic soda. Does that sound like something you want to put in your body? These processes are commonly used in the manufacture of synthetic Vitamins E and K. If you believe in homeopathy, and I do, even at the greatest titrations the vibration of toxic chemicals are never totally removed.
Vitamin E was discovered in 1922. Researchers found that it was important for the fertility in rats and required for babies. Those were the only known uses for many years. Then it was realized that certain symptoms responded to supplementation of Vitamin E. These symptoms included nerve issues due to changes in nerve membranes, peripheral neuropathy, myopathies, retinopathy, and skin and scaring issues. Babies and rats still need it as well. Cardiovascular and immune health is especially important for maintaining adequate stores of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is also used in foods that are susceptible to rancidity to extend the shelf life.
Those who eat highly processed and fast foods every day are definitely suffering from nutritional deficiencies. So many chemicals, perhaps a hundred thousand or more are used in the manufacture of processed foods and supplements, and so many valuable nutrients are removed or completely destroyed. Fat free or low-fat diets also eliminate important sources of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. That’s why being a nutritionist for over 50 years and a master formulator for over 30 years I’ve worked to find ways to best nourish the body. This nourishment supplies the body with tools to maintain strength and health. There is no magic formula. It’s all about taking care of ourselves with exercise, fresh air, sunshine, clean water, a diet rich in clean healthy food or slow food as they call it in Europe, and supplements as our bodies need them.
